What is IPL?

IPL in Shrewsbury is a time-tested, non-invasive procedure that stimulates your body’s natural healing processes to resurface the skin, creating a younger, more even-looking complexion. The IPL procedure targets uneven pigment on the face and body that are often created by sun exposure, causing minor damage to skin cells.

This process prompts the body’s natural healing processes to clear away damaged cells and produce new, healthy cells. Over time, you’ll see your wrinkles, scars, stretch marks, veins, and brown spots fade away as new collagen is formed and stubborn pigment is sloughed away. For the best results, IPL is most often performed over a series of treatments.

About the Icon Laser

The Icon laser from Cynosure offers multiple laser treatments from one safe platform, including the MaxG and the MaxYs. The Icon can be used on the face and many areas of the body.

Thanks to its Skintel® melanin reader—and along with the expertise of Dr. Lamoureux—we will be able to determine the tone of your skin and deliver just the right amount of light energy to achieve your cosmetic goals. With just a few gentle treatments, you’ll see smoother, more radiant skin.

The Icon MaxG and MaxYs

The MaxG handpiece is especially ideal for uneven skin tone, age spots, sunspots, freckles, rosacea, visible blood vessels, and hyperpigmentation on multiple areas of the body. Its powerful combination of filters is able to safely and effectively close larger, deeper facial blood vessels with minimal discomfort and downtime. The MaxYs handpiece delivers optimized light technology to address pigmented lesions. It is especially ideal for the chest, arms, and hands.

Another rejuvenating technique provided by the Icon laser is a non-ablative resurfacing treatment which allows for correction of wrinkles, scars, melasma, tissue texture, and pigment abnormalities.

What to Expect

During IPL Therapy

During IPL in Shrewsbury, Dr. Lamoureux or a trained specialist will use the laser to deliver low-intensity light energy to your skin. Cool rollers, our Zimmer Chiller machine, or a topical anesthetic will keep you comfortable during treatment, which typically takes anywhere from 10-45 minutes, depending on the area that is being addressed. Most patients report feeling a warm sensation, but nothing painful.

Recovery

After an IPL treatment, you can expect a sunburn-like warmth and redness, as well as minor swelling for a few days. These effects should only last a couple of hours or up to one day, and Dr. Lamoureux can help you manage these potential normal effects of the treatment.

Although you can resume normal activities immediately, it’s very important to keep the treated area(s) out of the sunlight for the best healing and recovery. If you must be outdoors, be sure to use a strong sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat to cast a shadow over the treated area.

If you’re being treated for brown spots, be aware that they will look darker for several days after the treatment as they undergo a natural exfoliation. This is normal.

Results

You may need several treatments to see optimal results. Dr. Lamoureux will work with you to determine the best course of treatment for your needs, and she will monitor your progress with you. Most patients undergo four IPL treatments, scheduled in monthly intervals.

Things to Consider Before IPL

An active tan is a contraindication to treatment. Therefore, Dr. Lamoureux recommends waiting at least one month after your skin has received a tan to undergo IPL treatment. If you are taking photosensitizing medications, using topical creams that may darken the skin or create peeling, she will discuss their use with you prior to undergoing treatment. She will also review your medical history to determine if you are an appropriate candidate for IPL.
