About Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy uses either hypertonic saline or sodium tetradecyl sulfate to reduce the visibility of varicose veins. When administered into the vein, the blood vessel wall is irritated and over the course of a few weeks, the vessel will either shrink down or go away completely. For small- to medium-sized spider veins, we use the only FDA-approved sclerosing agent Asclera®, an injection treatment that is also an anesthetic.

What to Expect

Before your varicose vein removal in the Worcester, MA area, you will have a consultation with Dr. Alissa Lamoureux. During this initial meeting, she will examine your veins and discuss your medical history to determine if sclerotherapy is the right procedure for your varicose veins removal or your spider vein treatment.

Spider Veins Removal

Spider veins are engorged, gnarled veins that bother many people who have them. They most commonly develop in the legs and feet. As mentioned above, sclerotherapy causes the blood vessel to shrink or disappear.

This happens because the solution that is injected re-directs the blood to a healthier vein, causing the spider vein to scab over and eventually collapse, and finally become absorbed into the body.

Early results are typically seen in 2-3 weeks, with final results anywhere between 2-6 months.

Five to six weeks following your initial treatment, you will have a follow-up visit with us to determine whether or not you’ll need an additional spider veins removal treatment.

After your spider vein treatment in Shrewsbury, you may see swelling, bruising, red areas, tiny scabs/sores, or changes in skin sensation at the injection sites, but these side effects should only last a few days. Although we recommend avoiding vigorous activities and exercise for at least four days after your treatment, it is important to walk around and move during recovery. You should not fly by plane in the time surrounding your treatment and should be prepared to wear thigh-length compression stockings for a minimum of 3 weeks after your treatment.

Are There Any Risks with Sclerotherapy?

Those with a darker skin tone may see dark lines or hyperpigmentation develop close to the treatment area, but this can be avoided if you stay out of the sun for a month following treatment. For other patients, new, small vessels may temporarily develop in the treated area 4-6 weeks after sclerotherapy. In addition, blood clots do sometimes form, although this is rare. If you are concerned about any of these risks, please bring them up during your consultation with us.

Asclera for Spider Vein Treatment

Millions of individuals are unhappy with the appearance of their spider veins: small clusters of red, blue, or purple veins on the thighs, calves, and ankles. Like varicose veins, spider veins can cause a person to want to cover their skin and hide them. For these types of unwanted veins, we use Asclera.

This is very much like regular sclerotherapy, only Asclera is also an anesthetic—so the injections are much more comfortable for the patient. FDA-approved in 2010, Asclera injections are effective and safe. In fact, very often you can actually see the vessel disappear as the solution is administered. Asclera has a very high patient satisfaction rate, and we are very pleased to offer it at Skin Dermatology.
