How BOTOX Works

BOTOX has been FDA-approved for aesthetic use in the U.S. since 2002. When injected, it halts the transmission of nerve signals to the muscles that are causing wrinkles. This makes the muscle relax, which means it temporarily cannot create a wrinkle. The result is a smoother, younger-looking appearance.

Dr. Lamoureux’s Approach

Dr. Lamoureux has vast experience injecting BOTOX in the Worcester, MA area, and her focus is on results. When you meet with her, she takes the time to learn all about you and your expectations for treatment. Before your treatment, she will assess your face during a consultation, studying the way your musculature moves to determine the right areas for injection and the right amount of BOTOX units that will work best for you. She will also listen to any experiences you may have had in the past with BOTOX injections that may have disappointed you so that she can adjust her treatment plan accordingly.

She also does her best to keep bruising at a minimum by using a hand-held ultrasound device that helps her better visualize vasculature under the skin.

Dr. Lamoureux’s technique for injecting is very gentle, and patients are pleasantly surprised with how easy the treatments are. In addition, they are thrilled with their results and the care Dr. Lamoureux takes in evaluating their individual needs.

Our patients love that for just one fee, they get to see a board-certified dermatologist up to three times (the consult, treatment, and follow-up). We do this to ensure patient satisfaction. We want you to know that we’re here for you—every step of your aesthetic journey with us.

Procedure

Treatment time with BOTOX in Shrewsbury is very quick, only requiring about 15 minutes. Dr. Alissa Lamoureux performs BOTOX injections herself, so Skin Dermatology patients get the benefit of having a board-certified dermatologist administering their BOTOX. Before the injections, your face will be cleansed and numbed (if needed). Dr. Lamoureux will then inject the BOTOX with her gentlest touch precisely into the correct areas.

You will feel some pressure during the injections, but most patients report very little discomfort. Dr. Lamoureux takes into consideration many things prior to the injections. Each patient’s muscles move in a very unique way, and Dr. Lamoureux uses her in-depth knowledge of anatomy to target the injections just so to achieve results that are improved and natural-looking. After the injections, Dr. Lamoureux will provide you with post-care instructions to ensure the best outcome.

Downtime and Results

One of the reasons why BOTOX is so popular is because it achieves excellent results with very little downtime involved. The majority of patients are able to return to their regular day immediately—although there are some restrictions. You are advised to remain upright for four hours. We recommend that for one week, you avoid putting any pressure on your face. This includes sleeping face-down, rubbing your face, applying makeup too aggressively, etc. We also recommend avoiding vigorous exercise, flying, any type of tanning, and experiencing any kind of excessive heat for 48 hours. Any other cosmetic procedures that you’re planning on having done to your face may need to be postponed until two weeks after your Botox treatment, and Dr. Lamoureux will be sure to advise you in this regard.

Side effects with BOTOX are rare, but can include a headache, nausea, swelling/bruising/numbness at the injection sites, tenderness, temporary eyelid drooping. Ice can be applied lightly and intermittently to the treated area for the first 48 hours, and limiting the intake of alcohol and blood-thinning medications is advised to decrease the chance of bleeding or bruising.

Results

Early BOTOX results can be seen about three days after treatment, with final results apparent at 2-3 weeks. The amount of time that your results will last will depend on how strong your muscles are, as well as how deep your wrinkles are. On average, though, BOTOX results last 3-4 months. Dr. Lamoureux will have you schedule a two-week follow-up where she will take additional photos of you, and will review your results. If any further treatment is needed at the time, she will provide a complimentary touch-up to ensure you’re pleased with your outcome.

FAQ

What other treatments are usually done with BOTOX?

How much is Botox at Skin Dermatology?

At Skin Dermatology, we price our BOTOX by area. We do this so that patients don’t have to worry about how many units they may or may not get, or if they will have to spend more for touch-ups at the follow-up appointment. Our area pricing includes your complementary consultation, the Botox, your follow-up visit, and any touch-ups that may be needed at that follow-up. Pricing begins at $250 per area, and the fee for any customized treatments can be discussed at your consultation.

What risks are involved in BOTOX injections?

The biggest risk with BOTOX is relaxing a muscle too much, which makes the muscle feel heavy. Dr. Lamoureux tries to avoid this in formulating your treatment plan by assessing your anatomy.

What other treatments are usually done with BOTOX?

Once your BOTOX results are finalized, there is a wide variety of procedures that can elevate your new appearance. These procedures include treatments with our fractional resurfacing laser or radiofrequency-enhanced microneedling to work on fine lines, pore size, and skin texture. Some patients may want to work on broken blood vessels or unwanted pigment, which IPL or PIQO-4 treatments are excellent for. Others may want a powerful exfoliation treatment, or simply a great glow for their skin. For these, our signature dermaplaning facial, an oxygenated facial, or a light-grade chemical peel can be performed.
